I will admit it…I have become somewhat of a Cricut Mystery Box addict. But it’s fine, I’m growing my craft supply collection and saving money doing it–at least this is how I explain it to my husband. 😉 (Actually, he’s super supportive of my new addiction hobby, so I’m pretty lucky.)
If you’re new to the Cricut Mystery Box world, welcome! I have a whole post explaining what regular Cricut Mystery Boxes are, but this post will be all about Digital Cricut Mystery Boxes. Keep reading to see if they’re right for you and how to get one!
IN THIS POST:
What Are Cricut Mystery Boxes? What Are Digital Cricut Mystery Boxes?
Cricut Mystery Boxes are limited-time themed “grab bags” of Cricut supplies, available for purchase on the Cricut website about once a month ( and sometimes more frequently, like during March which is Craft Month). There are two types of mystery boxes: we’ll call one “regular” (I talk all about the regular mystery boxes in my first post, What Are Cricut Mystery Boxes) and the other type is digital. Digital mystery boxes contain digital files instead of physical products. They are also available on the Cricut website for a longer period of time (because they can’t physically sell out like regular boxes).
What Comes In a Digital Cricut Mystery Box?
Digital mystery boxes usually contain several licensed or themed digital image sets that will be automatically downloaded to your Design Space image library after purchase. The name of the box will give you a hint as to what kind (so a Disney Digital Mystery Box will contain several Disney image sets). Image sets can be either SVG cut files or Print then Cut images. Digital mystery boxes could also contain fonts to be used in Design Space.
These digital image sets are *usually brand new to Design Space, but will also be available for purchase at a later date in Design Space once the mystery box is gone. However, this could be several months later and at a much higher price–you’re getting a much better deal if you can purchase them all at once in a digital mystery box.
*I have heard, however, with the March 2021 Disney Digital Mystery Box that these images were possibly not new to Design Space and may also be showing up in Design Space already…if you have not purchased this box, I’d love to know if you can see the images in Design Space on your account/if they’re available for purchase/how much they cost.
How Many Digital Images Come in a Digital Mystery Box?
Each digital mystery box will come with 4-6 image sets, which comes out to anywhere between 60-145 images (the exact number will vary by box). When you do the math, you’ll see that that is a ton of images for the price!
Are Digital Cricut Mystery Boxes the Same as Regular Mystery Boxes?
No! Please do not purchase a digital mystery box expecting to receive the usual shipped box of various Cricut supplies and materials. This is a DIGITAL box so it will only contain digital files to use in Cricut Design Space.
Will Anything Be Shipped With a Digital Mystery Box?
No! You will only receive DIGITAL files that will automatically be downloaded to your Design Space image library after purchase.
Why Did My Order Confirmation Mention Shipping?
I know, the order confirmation page and e-mail you receive after purchase of a digital mystery box has some confusing language–it talks about what to expect in your shipment, how many boxes, etc. Unfortunately, this is just the automated message that Cricut sends with any purchase, but there will be no shipment with a digital mystery box. All your items will be automatically added to your Design Space library after purchase.
Will a Cricut Cutie Come In a Digital Mystery Box?
No! You will not receive any physical items, even (or especially) Cricut cuties, in a digital mystery box. (If you’re not sure what a Cricut cutie is or how to get one, head back to my original post on Cricut Mystery Boxes.)
When Are Digital Cricut Mystery Boxes Released?
Digital mystery boxes are released once every couple months or so. They are usually released on a weekday and most likely not at the same time that a regular mystery box is available. Like regular mystery boxes, I would plan on digital mystery boxes being released sometime between the hours of 9:00 am and 2:00 pm MST–but time of day won’t matter too much here given that digital mystery boxes won’t sell out like the regular ones.
How Do You Find Out When a Digital Mystery Box is Released?
As of March 2021, Cricut has started releasing all mystery boxes as complete mysteries, whereas in the past they let certain bloggers and Cricut Product Experts know the release date beforehand, as well as the contents of the box. (There is a ton more information on that back in my original Cricut Mystery Box post.)
The past couple boxes were also released as a mystery, but because they’re digital, a few bloggers were able to create YouTube videos the same day it was released showing the contents (that way you could still see the digital files before purchasing if you wanted). I have started creating reveal videos as well (when my toddler allows)—you can subscribe to my YouTube channel here.
If you’re interested in digital mystery boxes (or even the regular ones), I recommend joining a Cricut crafting Facebook group, such as Jennifer Maker’s, because people will frequently post when they’ve noticed a new mystery box go up for sale on the Cricut website. The other way is to stalk the Cricut website yourself–lately, I’ve been keeping a permanent tab open to the Cricut search results for “mystery box” and I just refresh it regularly (yes, it’s obsessive, I know, but I’m fine, I promise 😜).
Because I’ve become somewhat of a Cricut Mystery Box addict, I have started sending e-mail notifications to my Cricut e-mail list if I notice that a Cricut Mystery Box has been released on the Cricut website. Scroll back a little bit to the subscribe box to join that list! (Please note, because I am a regular customer like you, I may or may not see the mystery box in time before it sells out, so I cannot guarantee you’ll always receive an e-mail notification–but I’ll try my best!)
If you’re hesitant to buy a digital mystery box without knowing the contents, just wait a few hours for someone on Facebook or YouTube to share the list of contents (and if I purchase a digital mystery box, I will also update the contents in this post). The good thing about digital mystery boxes is they won’t sell out and they’ll be on the Cricut website for at least a week or two, so you won’t be in a huge rush if you want to wait.
How Much Do Digital Mystery Boxes Cost? How Do You Get Discounts?
Digital Cricut Mystery Boxes are usually priced at either $29.99 or $39.99. I would imagine the difference in cost is either due to the number of images or the higher licensing costs of the images.
Cricut Access subscribers will also receive their standard 10% discount on a digital mystery box. (Cricut Access Premium subscribers receive the same 10% discount on all licensed digital images.)
Not sure if you need Cricut Access? Check out my post all about Cricut Access subscriptions!
You may also be able to use an additional coupon if you have one, though, in my experience, coupons have only worked for me on mystery box orders when I’ve had other items in the order (I don’t think it took any additional cost off the mystery box itself). Might be worth a try, though, if you’re not rushed to checkout (in other words, I wouldn’t personally waste time on this for a regular mystery box)!
Purchasing a Cricut machine or heat press? Use coupon code AUBREE10 for an additional 10% off!
Are Digital Mystery Boxes a Good Deal?
Yes! Cricut Digital Mystery Boxes are a steal (as long as you think you’ll be able to use the images). To give you an idea of the value, a past Disney Digital Mystery Box (from November 2020) included 4 image sets for a total cost of $29.99. If you wanted to buy these sets in Design Space now, it would cost you a whopping $95.96!
(I’m actually really bummed I missed that November 2020 Disney box because there are two sets in it I would LOVE to have (the Disney Alphabet and Disney Totally Mickey! sets)…I just don’t know if it’s worth over $50 at this point…we’ll see, maybe they’ll be a birthday present to myself. 😉)
Do Digital Mystery Boxes Sell Out?
Digital mystery boxes will not sell out (because they’re digital, Cricut can essentially sell an unlimited number of these until they decide to remove it from their site). However, the digital mystery boxes will still only be available for a limited amount of time (I believe Cricut keeps a digital box on their site for about two weeks before removing it) so don’t wait too long to purchase it if you’re interested.
Who Can Purchase a Digital Cricut Mystery Box?
Unfortunately, digital mystery boxes are only available to US customers (I’m not sure why, but my best guess would be that Cricut has licensing restrictions outside the US–so I’m sorry if this excludes you!). If you are a US customer, you do not need to have an Access subscription but having one will give you a 10% discount (and of course all the other perks of being a subscriber).
How Do You Download Your Digital Mystery Box Images?
Once you’ve purchased the digital mystery box, the images are automatically added to your Cricut Design Space library (no need to download anything yourself). You will just need to log out and back into Design Space and they will show up in your image library.
How Do You Access Your Digital Mystery Box Images?
Once you’ve signed out and back into Design Space, your images will be in your image library. To search for them, you will need to select some filters in the left hand sidebar. Choose “Purchased” under Ownership, and then you can further filter by Brand (so, in my case, I chose “Disney” because I purchased a Disney Digital Mystery Box).
If not all images in the image set are showing up, you can click on the little “i” icon on one of the images and then “view image set.” You will need to do this for each image set if you want to see all images in the set individually. From here, if you want to go back to all the sets in your search results, just click “back to image” in the top left of the screen.
You can also find your new images by searching by the name of the image set. If you’re not sure what the names are, I would recommend finding a blogger or YouTuber who has released that information for the particular mystery box you purchased (I will also try to keep this page up to date as best as I can, at least for the boxes I purchase personally). You can find all the image set names for the March 2021 Disney Digital Mystery Box near the end of this post!
Can You Cancel a Digital Mystery Box Order or Get a Refund?
No, all sales are final. This is true of all mystery boxes, actually (digital and regular), but especially makes sense with digital given the nature of digital products (once downloaded, there’s no way for Cricut to know if you’ve already used the images). Of course, if you have any trouble with your order for some reason, you can always reach out to Cricut.
“But I Thought This Was a Regular Mystery Box and Purchased it by Mistake!”
I’m sorry, this definitely happens! We get so excited to finally see a mystery box available on Cricut’s site that we may purchase it before realizing it’s in fact a digital mystery box. Unfortunately, the sale is still final, but hopefully you’ll still be able to use some of the images in your craft projects!
If you want to avoid making the same purchase mistake in the future, please read the item description closely: it will clearly state that it’s a digital mystery box (but I totally understand if you skipped over that in your excitement to see that a mystery box was finally available for once!). Also, the photo in the item description will usually be of a logo and not of the little crafted boxes you see for regular mystery boxes. (You can see examples of regular mystery box descriptions in my original Cricut Mystery Box post.)
Can You Sell Products You Make With Digital Mystery Box Files?
Okay, this is kind of a tangent but I thought it important to mention here, especially if you run a craft business or something like that. Even though you’ve purchased licensed images through Cricut, you are not allowed to use them for anything other than personal use. So, unfortunately, you cannot sell items that use those licensed images.
This is also true of anywhere you purchase licensed images. So, say you’ve purchased a Disney image from an Etsy seller, and they might even tell you that you can use their files for commercial use. But unfortunately the Etsy seller doesn’t have the authority to give you that license–Disney still owns the license to those images and I would bet money that the Etsy seller has not gone through the correct channels to be selling licensed images.
Of course, we could get into all kinds of legalities over this (a lot of which I probably don’t understand wholly), but my best advice to you is to play it safe and only use licensed images for yourself!
So, back to the real question…
Are Digital Cricut Mystery Boxes Worth It?
This is going to totally depend on the person, but I recommend you consider three things before purchasing a digital mystery box:
Are You Going to Actually Use the Digital Images?
A Disney Digital Mystery Box will contain Disney images, the Warner Brothers Digital Mystery Box in December 2020 included images from Warner Brothers Christmas movies/shows, a Star Wars box would contain Star Wars images–you get the idea. So, ask yourself, do you craft with these types of images and themes? If you use your Cricut strictly for papercrafting, could you see yourself using these images in your papercrafts (or ask yourself the same question if you’re a vinyl crafter)?
Again, if you think you might be interested based on the title of the digital mystery box, feel free to wait a day or so until someone releases the exact contents of the box (but please don’t do this for a regular non-digital mystery box or it will be sold out!).
When the Warner Brothers Digital Mystery Box came out in December 2020, I glanced at the contents on Jennifer Maker’s blog but ultimately decided it wasn’t worth it to me when I only liked a few of the images, but probably not enough to use them very often, especially given their seasonality.
But when the Disney Digital Mystery Box came out in March 2021, I purchased it without even trying to find a list of the contents! (Mostly because we’re HUGE Disney fans around here, and I was disappointed I didn’t purchase the last one, so I knew it would be valuable to me. And then there’s the fact that my checkout trigger finger is pretty quick these days for Cricut Mystery Boxes…😂)
If there’s a chance you might want to purchase these digital sets in the future, just remember that digital mystery boxes are only available for a limited time, and when they’re taken down from the Cricut website, you’ll never see them at that same low price again.
…which brings us to the next point:
Does the Price Make Sense for You?
For me, if I’m a fan of the type of image (like I am a huge fan of Disney), then the price is a no-brainer because digital mystery boxes are a steal! This is the cheapest way you’re ever going to be able to purchase these images. But, for some of you, maybe you only like one set or one image in it and it would be more cost-effective waiting for that one image to come available in Design Space later on.
Remember that image sets can be just as pricey on their own later on as an entire digital mystery box (especially the Disney image sets, it seems, which can be between $25-30 on their own). So, if you like at least one whole set in the digital mystery box, it may be worth it to you to buy it now, and that way you’re getting all the other image sets, too, for about the same price.
Honestly, I think Digital Cricut Mystery Boxes are an amazing deal…but only if you’re going to use the contents!
Are You a Cricut Design Space User?
This actually might be the most important question to consider of the three. Digital Mystery Box images and fonts can only be used in Cricut Design Space. I don’t know of a way that you can transfer the files to another software program or download them to share or edit somewhere else–I doubt there is a way, which would make sense given that they’re usually licensed files. So, if you use a different (non-Cricut) cutting machine, Cricut Digital Mystery Boxes won’t do you any good.
I hope that gives you some ideas when considering whether a digital mystery box is right for you! Even if you do end up making an impulse buy, I don’t think you’ll regret it for the value you’re receiving. But you’ll have to let me know what you think in the comments below!

Digital Cricut Mystery Boxes
I hope you’ve found this post helpful! Leave a comment below and let me know if you have any other questions about Digital Cricut Mystery Boxes. Have you purchased a digital mystery box before?

Don’t forget to pin and save for later!

Hi, and thanks for your very informative post! 🙂 Not going to lie, I was super disappointed to see a second digital mystery box in a row.
I’m new to Cricut and happily I bought it right before Craft Month, so I totally got spoiled with the multiple physical boxes (I love them as much as you do and I stalk the Cricut website like you do – I had to laugh, because I also keep that that same tab open and refresh constantly.)
Have you heard anything about an approximate time frame? Even something like “the middle of May” would be helpful. 🙂
Thanks so much!
Julie
Hi Julie! Same! I was super hoping it was going to be a regular physical mystery box this time (and one with a cutie!). I wish I were on the “inside” with Cricut and got a heads up when their next one will be, but I’m just a regular customer like you. 🙂 I’m wondering if they’ll release a physical one before April is over, though. If they did that, that would mean a digital box and regular box were on their site at the same time, which isn’t as common but I want to say they did that last December? Anyway, I feel like we’re due for one and they *usuallly* have at least one regular mystery box a month. We can hope!!
