DIY Reindeer Hot Chocolate Cones & Free Printable Tags

If you’re in need of a fun DIY gift this holiday season, these reindeer hot cocoa cones are a great way to spread a little holiday cheer! These hot chocolate bags are filled with hot chocolate powder, a layer of chocolate chips, and a layer of mini marshmallows – a delicious treat on a cold winter day (once you add water, of course). I think this is the cutest gift idea and also makes a great party favor.
I’m definitely not the first person to make these adorable reindeer hot chocolate cones, but oh my goodness, they’re so cute! I also prefer how I shaped my cute antlers compared to other versions I’ve seen. What you need to make reindeer piping bag hot chocolate gifts
- 12″ piping bags (if you’re starting with anything larger than this, you may want to trim the top of the bag first)
- hot cocoa mix: This is my favorite hot chocolate and also happens to be available at my Costco, which is great if you’re mass-producing these gifts! You could also make a homemade hot chocolate mix.
- mini chocolate chips: optional (and to be honest, they’re mostly for appearance, since they never melt well in hot chocolate)
- mini marshmallows
- brown pipe cleaners
- twisty ties or small rubber bands: optional, I was able to just use the pipe cleaner antlers as closures for the piping bags
- small red pom poms (I like the glitter ones – I found a pack of red and green ones at Dollar Tree)
- googly eyes (also from Dollar 25 Tree, or get these self-adhesive ones)
- glue dots (I highly advise against using hot glue – you don’t want to accidentally melt the piping bags and leach plastic into the hot chocolate powder or something)
- string or ribbon

How to assemble reindeer hot chocolate cones
Fill piping bag
Fill your piping bag in this order:
- 1/3 cup hot cocoa mix (or enough to make one serving of hot chocolate when you add 1 cup of water or milk – 1/3 cup makes this pretty sweet, but the recipient can always add more water/milk if needed and I’d rather that than watery hot chocolate!)
- 1/8 cup or about 2 tablespoons mini chocolate chips
- a small handful of mini marshmallows
Do your best to keep the piping bag upright while filling (standing it up in a mug or glass is helpful). Try to dump the hot cocoa powder in neatly so it doesn’t coat the sides of the piping bag. Also, the more you handle the bags (or if you lay them down), the more the powder will infiltrate your chocolate chip layer (okay, not the end of the world, but I’m still bugged by it 😆).
Make antlers
Twist the top of the piping bag closed and wrap a brown pipe cleaner around it. Twist tight to secure the piping bag. (If you’re struggling getting the piping bag close enough, you may want to close the piping bag with a twist tie first.)
Fold one pipe cleaner end in a wavy shape as shown (with 3 humps), keeping the end slightly longer. Secure the end to the other side of the pipe cleaner by twisting/folding it just enough to hold. Shape the antler with your fingers, squishing the loops closed.
Repeat with the opposite antler. (This is the same way I made my pipe cleaner antlers for my painted terracotta Christmas pots!)
Add pom pom nose and googly eyes
Use glue dots to attach a red pom-pom for a nose (I attached mine at the very tip of the piping bag, but you can go higher if you want). Attach googly eyes with adhesive dots as well.
Tie on gift tag
Tie a string or ribbon around the top of the piping bag to attach a printable hot cocoa gift tag, which you can download below!
Free printable reindeer hot chocolate gift tags
It’s super helpful to include an instruction gift tag with your hot chocolate gift. This way, your recipient knows about how much water or milk to add to make their hot chocolate. Also, it lets your recipient know that the mysterious brown powder is indeed hot chocolate mix in case you’re not able to give it to them in person and explain (though the marshmallows are probably a helpful clue).
